Theme: Tourism and the Coast

The Coast at all costs

Urbanisation on the Spanish coast has increased by over 25% om the last five years. The coastal urban belt has become one of Europe’s most densely populated zones over the last 50 years. Benidorm is ‘the tourist town par excellence’, and a project of modern age.

New opportunities for old landscapes

The Mediterranean is undoubtedly one of the first tourist destinations in the world. But there are innovative trends in planning and design. ‘It will deal with their potentials and limitations in changing the tourist-development model within the perspective of climate change.’

Destination Croatia

The Croatian National Tourist Board sells the image of virgin landscapes, by the slogan ‘Croatia - the Mediterranean as it once was’. At the same time, global capital is entering the country. The key issue is how to curb the unstoppable process of coastal transformation knowingly what is the ‘Mediterranean as it could be’. This is the motto under which a project Croatian Archipelago New Lighthouses explored alternative solutions.

The road to nature

What do we want from nature? Or what do we want with nature? Look at it? Move in it? Be one with it? The Norwegian Public Road Administration are establishing 18 roads throughout Norway as designated scenic byways, inviting architects and landscape designers to design road-posts, view-points, pathways and various other facilities.

The Dutch coast: safety first

A broad sandy beach, high waves, beautiful sand dune ridges framed by varied inland dunes. These are the elements of a coastline that tourists find attractive. The management of the Dutch coast is done out of neccesity. The coast is a constant source of concern which is ever increasing with the rising of the sea level.
